Stripy Fur, Diamante Collars

The Christmas week double-header is right here.

And a disappointing weekend it was for the Faithful.  So much has been said and written about Silverthorn, the money on the ice etc that adding to it here is a bit redundant.

Fact is, Telford won both legs and did so convincingly.  No doubt the end of the season will see them sitting at number 1, exactly where they are now.

Phoenix had an opportunity to practice for the battle for the number 2 spot and for the Cup and playoffs though.

On the away leg (no audio available, sadly), Jacob Corson-Heron took a puck to the chops and we hope he'll be back with us soon.  It sure looked like it would smart in the morning.

Twas The Match Before Christmas

Listen to the show right here.

So, the last game before everyone goes off and deals with family stuff and tries to survive into 2015.

It was never going to be a smooth one - matches between Phoenix and MK never are - but this game gave us plenty of bumps, bashes and penalties to talk about.  So we did just that.

That's enough nonsense from me anyway.  See you on the other side.

p.s. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for Marc Levers who was injured this evening.

Honey For Nothing

Thanks to Alex K for the title!

A double episode for your ears this week. How's about that then? And you can listen right here.

First up is Stuart Kilburn (with Ben Callaghan and FOTS, Scuttsy off of the live shows).  Not a result upon which Phoenix will want to dwell but it did give us a chance to play podcasting in another car park.

Next is the home game as Ben Knight talks us through the smoking of the Bees.  He is joined by the usual podcast team (well, some of them).

After all of the action on the ice, we caught up with FOTS, Declan Ryan and "That Man From the Czech Republic" himself, Michal Psurny.

That's a whole lot of podcast so get stuck in.

Also, don't forget, you can now listen to us on TuneIn, Stitcher and via your Chromecast on your televisionybox.  Why would you not want to do that?!

Tepid Tempest

A tiring weekend is guaranteed when you face the Flames at the Spectrum and then the Lightning at the Dome.

As much as the controversial goings-on down in Guildford were disappointing for the Faithful, the home win with both sides running on near empty was an odd experience.  Lots of moments where either side might have erupted on any other night but, on this occasion, both sides looked as though they needed the time to tick and the result to get posted.  So, running to a penalty shootout is hardly what either side wanted.

All of that with Stephen Fone getting injured and with an absent Walker and Neil, everyone will be needing their sleep after this one.

We'll admit, this is not the episode we'll be submitting to the Sonys (or RAAs as they are now) but bear with us.

And anyway, this show is the first time we have Bobby Chamberlain on with us!  Enjoy and listen right here.

Comin' atcha!

It's time for a double-whammy episode!

With Solway Sharks visiting the Ice Dome on Saturday and Guildford Flames making the journey up on the Sunday, it was quite the busy weekend for the Phoenix Faithful.

Stuart Kilburn takes to the microphone on Saturday and has a great post-game chat with a man we all love.

Sunday was Ben's turn to chirp in your ears.  And so he did.

Sunday's game was also the first of the Groupon nights of the season.  It was packed and the crowd was treated to a crazily intense game.  And 90s one-hit-wonders Cleopatra were in the house. And probably comin' at ya!  So, that's a thing.

Have a listen right here.

"We love Manchester Phoenix and the Phoenix Podcast is the best thing that was ever made to go into ears." - (never actually said by) Cleopatra!

Can't Take All The Credit...

Have a listen right here.

This week sees the return of Ben to the show.  Rumours of his death had been greatly exaggerated.  Mainly by him.

Far more importantly, this week saw an epic bounce in the right direction for Phoenix with a trouncing of the Bison at the Ice Dome.  It may not have looked like it would turn out the way it did but this could be big for the Phoenix fortunes.

High spirits were slightly interrupted this week by Bara Brith-gate.  More on that to come, I'm sure.  Stuart Kilburn; when you think you can trust someone, eh?

Things were also a little tragic down in Bracknell but we are not going to talk about it.  That was before the turning-point.

Thanks to all of you who tweeted in this week and to those who were so kind at the rink.

Phantoms/Halloween Pun Here

Listen to this week's show here.

The rocky road that is the start of this season continues this week with a cracking game against Telford just gone but a not-so-great game against the Peterborough Phantoms four days later.

Stuart catches-up with Jacob Corson-Heron and Jared Dickinson to talk about the road ahead as well as the road travelled.

By A Whisker!

Listen to this week's show here.

A Telford game is always going to be tricky this season and even more so when you are under the shadow of injuries and a bit of mixed form.

Nevertheless, Phoenix and their Shropshire rivals put on one hell of a show this weekend.

Here to talk about are Stuart and the usual team (Ben is still circling the plughole) and there's even a little bit of chat with that Joe Graham.

Blackburn Hawks Down

Check out this week's show right here.

More-or-less-full-time-host, Stuart Kilburn, is back with this week's show which brings you the latest from the Basingstoke near-miss result on the Saturday and the Cup game against our lovely visitors, the Blackburn Hawks.

Injuries still abound at Phoenix but it's still early days and, with any luck, that will the final 2 points that Bison will take from Manchester this season.

This week's guest is Jack Watkins.

Dogs - Stars

Better late than never!

Listen to this great double episode, featuring interviews with Adam Walker and Neil Morris, right here.

This episode covers the Dogs home clash and the first meeting with the Billingham Stars.

Send your appreciation and love to Peter Bradbury and Stuart Kilburn!

Four Points For Rick

Listen to this week's episode right here.

As birthday boy Stuart Kilburn and gardening god Dave Ireland stand-in again for a frankly malingering Ben Knight, this weekend brought both joy and sadness for the Phoenix Faithful and the assembled masses at the Ice Dome.

A great away result against the squatting MK Lightning with injuries piling-up already brought a triumphant (though very tired) Phoenix squad back to Altrincham for Sunday.

Before the home game, a minute of silent observation for Rick, who passed-away this week.  The Podcast will miss him at the Windmill on playoff weekends, for sure.

Buoyed by a dedicated Faithful and some counter-stacked odds, the Phoenix flew it home on a wing and a prayer on Sunday night and, although injuries continue to plague the start of this season, Phoenix are far from caving.

Sunday, 21 September 2014

As Ben languishes at home with the heavy hand of death upon his nostrils, Stuart Kilburn steps in to cover podcasting duties and to babysit those mucky-pups from over t'hill.  And you can listen right here.

After a game played at breakneck pace in Basingstoke and a rare pounding from the chaotic canines in Altrincham, Phoenix walk away with no points.

So, as social media presumes the sky to be falling, we must all pull together and give each other a big Phoenix family hug and just hope we get through it.

Onwards will hopefully mean upwards.

Remember to tweet @skilburn to say how awesome a host he is!

Bad Kitties!

Catch this week's show right here.

The opening week of the EPIHL is usually a pretty solid affair for Phoenix.  Usually there are four points in the bag and the usual WOTR loss (the what?) is behind us.

This weekend was a cracking demonstration that this league is getting tougher and that Wildcats will not be anyone's whipping-boy this year.

As benches were cleared and sticks were used as weapons by people who should know better in some of the more southern rinks, Phoenix had two solid games of hockey in Bracknell - where the two points were successfully nabbed - and then at the Ice Dome where those bad kitties managed to hold us to a point.

Nevertheless, the potential in this Phoenix side is clear.  This is the first weekend and people will be wanting results from the very start but mark our words: Phoenix is rising.

On this week's show, we start the season with a post-weekend chat with the Phoenix Captain of some 6 years, Luke Boothroyd.  We talk about the season to come, the opening weekend, the opposition and what he has been up to off the ice.

Dogs' Own County - War Of The Roses

The first episode of the series is right here.

Welcome to all of you.  We are pleased to have made it through the hockey-desert that was the summer and to find some excitement on the other side.

Of course, you will have heard that the WOTR was not quite everything we had hoped for (again) this year but it was a chance to see the new boys in action and to see how the bits of Tony Hand's 2014/15 roster fit together.

Of course, the Podcast Team are all back and waiting to ride this rollercoaster with you.  All your favourites (and the odd extra one) are with us and so is Disclaimer Bot.

A big thanks to Peter Bradbury (Below Average Sportcast) and Stuart Kilburn (Openshadow) for the off season content.

Now, let's put this weekend behind us and move on....

Sister Sledge Show 3

Have a listen right here.

The last episode of the sledge hockey side of things for this season saw the match between the Phoenix and Humberside title-chasers, the Kingston Kestrels, take place (sort of) with a few problems that saw the Kestrels unable to ice a team and so forfeit the game.

Despite that, they made the most of a bad situation and had a friendly which included two Phoenix players joining the opposition and saw a player score for both teams in the game and it not count as an own goal (one for the statisticians out there).

The crazy scenario saw players move back to the original teams and play out an enthralling game of sledge hockey for the fans that came and you get the pleasure of hearing Peter Bradbury (from the Below Average Sportcast) try to explain with Pete Hagan just 'What the Hell is going on?'

I hope we made sense of it all and that you enjoy the coverage of the final Phoenix sledge hockey home game of the season, with an exciting idea prior to the upcoming games with the Steeldogs home and away.

Interviews with Phoenix coach Pete Hagan & Graham Wilson (sorry with early part of interview, technical probs) as they give us their take on events and look towards Peterborough.

To Hell and Back - Sledge Special 2

Listen to this Sledge Special right here.

With the Phoenix playing their second Planet Ice Sledge Hockey game at home this season, we sent once again the Master's Apprentice in Peter Bradbury from the BELOW AVERAGE SPORTSCAST on the case, to see if the Phoenix could get revenge on the Cardiff Devils after they beat the Manchester side 5-2 down in the Valleys last weekend.
The game was brutal, exciting and barn-burning for the spectators and an equally physically and gruelling game for the players.

Goals, hits, bit of controversy and two well-matched teams giving it as good as they got!
Interviews this week are with Anthony Booth of the Phoenix and MOTM; plus Devil`s Russell Willey to which was his homecoming for him, and Phoenix coach Pete Hagan. Feeding BritCaster.com

Summer Special 2014

We are pleased to present to you an epic 1 hour and 45 minutes (or thereabouts) of the Official Manchester Phoenix Podcast!  Listen right HERE.

The first half of the show is a review of the rosters forming around the league and those big changes going on within the EPIHL's very structure.

Then Stuart Kilburn and Peter Bradbury (regulars on the show) bring you some interviews from the exclusive signings event at the Grosvenor Casino, Stockport.

You might be hearing the signings for the first time on this show so I won't spoil it for you in these show notes!  (TIP: fast forward to the last third for some words of wisdom from the players)

We will probably be back with another summer show at some point soon.  Maybe from a boat.  That's how we roll.

Monday, 16 June 2014

It's a Sledgisode!

With the EPL boys all playing golf, taunting each other on Twitter and wondering who the new arrival EPL team might be, we thought it might be an idea to take a look at one of the other Manchester Phoenix teams in the MPIHC.

This time around, it's the turn of those crazy fools and their sledges.  And this is brutal stuff.  Just take a listen right here.

As Ben was braving the North East (and getting too close to Andre Payette's summer haunt with his Steelpups), the fearless Peter Bradbury from off of our show and from his own Below Average Sportscast, took to Alty to catch up with Pete Hagan, Karl Nicholson (awesome Team GB guy!) and Peterborough's Matthew Coleman.

We'd also like to thank Graham Wilson for making this happen.

So, stick in your earbuds and take a listen to the latest action from Altrincham.

And stay tuned for some more sneaky little episodes over the summer - you'll only know about them if you get subscribed.

Series 6 Extra Bits

The season is over and we've all caught our breath.  Bison fans are still grinning, no doubt.  Manchester awaits news of who is coming back and who is going where.

After the game on the Sunday of the playoff weekend, we had a little chat with some of our show's contributors and with some of out players.  Have a listen right here.

Other than the results of the games, the single biggest topic of press releases and club write-ups of the weekend was the Phoenix Faithful's reaction to the loss: We are proud of you!

Well, as much as we are all proud of the way the boys comported themselves, the Club can be utterly proud of how its fans paid tribute to the efforts of everyone on the ice.

Like I say in the show, there will probably be one or two extra shows during the summer, just to touch base.  Keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook for details.  We may even break one of the signings this summer......  maybe...

All that remains for now is for me to thank you for listening for another series and to thank everyone who has been on the show or helped us out and to thank The Old Windmill for another year's hospitality.

Playoffs Live 2014! - Sunday 6th April

It's day 2 and we're all feeling a little the worse for wear at the start of this show.

You can have a listen right here.

We have a serious discussion about the future of the EPL, both in terms of the teams and the officials.

There is Rumour Mill activity and a pick over the semi-finals.

Then attention turns towards the matter of the impending final between Basingstoke Bison and Manchester Phoenix.

As always at playoff time, we don't just have the Phoenix fans and crew, we are joined by Joe (Swindon), Anthony (Bison), Rob (MK) and Arron (Flames).

Coming up fairly soon, we'll bring you a little extra show featuring the post-game interviews with the likes of Stephen Fone, James Neil, Ben Wood, Liam Chong
and Jacob Corson-Heron.

Also, in this week's show, the music you heard was from:
William and Victoria
Dubbul O (produced by Pro P)
A Minor Apocalypse

Only time will tell!

We Bee Going To Coventry

Listen to the show right here.

Well, not content with being winning the League, those little upstarts have swatted the Bees and have secured their spot in the hockey jamboree next weekend!

The Bees are a persistent lot and, whilst many were anticipating a goal deficit or maybe a draw on the away leg, most were predicting a win.

The Bees put up the sort of fight that kept people guessing throughout though and it was not settled until the last 10 minutes of the 120 minutes.  That, ladies and gentlement, is what playoff hockey is made of.

So, the time for the road tip of the year is upon us and we'll be facing the Swindon Wildcats on the Saturday.  That's no easy ask, especially after they knocked-out the MK boys on their "home" ice.  It is, really in every sense, on.

And what of the podcast?

I Hope You Like Interviews!

I hope you like interviews because that's what we have for you this week.  Listen right here.

We had yet another attack of the tech gremlin that lives in our recording devices.  I think that my Yamaha recorder may be retiring just like some Peterborough fans say Tony Hand should.

Anyway, we are joined on the show (for the first time!) by Jacob Corson-Heron as we talk playoffs, places on the bench, ice time and coaching.  This is a very honest and open interview from the winner of the 2014 Unsung Hero Award at Phoenix.  At the podcast, we think he deserves it so much that it might as well have been made for him.

We also have a bit of a chat with Anna from PTV and we catch up with Treeve Sperrin of Sperrin Brewery to find out all about the rather exciting Fiery Phoenix real ale that awaits us on Spon Street, Coventry.

We'd also like to take a minute or two to introduce you to the guys and girls at 123-reg.co.uk and to tell you how to get onto them for your website and domain needs.

Moving things along a bit....

We are pleased to announce that we have been making some changes at Podcast Towers.

Our friends at 123-reg.co.uk are going to dig their hands into their pockets whenever one of you lovely listeners visits us and then visits them to buy something.

We hope the use whatever we earn to put into keeping the show running and making the show bigger and better, whether it's by more live shows, better effects or something else.  Anything that's left over, we'll push in the direction of the Phoenix Foundation.  We make no profit from it.

We use 123-reg.co.uk for buying domains (just like phoenix-podcast.com) and they represent good value from a company based in the UK.  In fact, they are the largest domain registrar and hosting provider.

So, if you are thinking of starting a new fan blog, podcast or just a shop to sell mail-order bara brith, get your domain at 123-reg.co.uk.

They don't just deal in domain names either.  They can host and help you set-up your new website (whatever it's for) and they can even sort you out with an email address that's a bit more personal to you than Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail.

Another Banner On Our Wall

Listen to the show right here.

As the Phoenix stormed to their second EPL League Title, the Ice Dome rumbled like an irritated juggernaut and a proper hockey battle unfolded before the assembled masses.

What was witnessed was a truly immense game from both teams and a demonstration of what grit, determination and bloody-mindedness can do when it wears a hockey jersey.

Assuming that you are still breathing and that your eyes and ears are not bleeding, you make it through to the final throws of this epic EPL season...

As Bison take their Cup victory and Phoenix snare the League Title, there is one more bit of tin left on the shelf and both these mammoth performers will want a double.  What comes next is a warm up weekend for a clash of the giants in the 2014 Playoffs.

3 Games, 6 Points

Listen to the show right here.

There's not much you can say when your team has played 3 games across 3 days and has won them all.  That's some ask, especially at this point in the season.

The League title is tantalisingly close and only Bison can really stop the Phoenix lifting the Cup.  Things are looking good for the playoffs too.

In short, there's everything to play for and there's no better motivator than that.

This week's battles are here, summed-up in 38 minutes.

Also, Stuart tries his hand at producing...

Saturday night will see Phoenix dealing with the Flames (after a tough away stint in Peterborough).  Then the new kid with the cool trainers will be attempting to get revenge against Phoenix on the Sunday night away jaunt to Telford.

Finally, congrats to Jacob Corson-Heron for his MOM award tonight :-)

Enjoy the show!

Sunday, 23 February 2014

A Production Line

Listen to the show right here.

A few games to talk about this week.  Firstly, the Telford Tigers away jaunt was probably one of the best games the Phoenix have seen this season.

Next up was the rather less glorious away trip to Basingstoke.  It didn't end well and there were lessons to learn.

Finally, the Sunday night visit of the Bracknell Bees.  An altogether quieter affair but with two goals conceded to a considerably weaker side (missing Galazzi and Wiggins), still some lessons to learn, maybe?

All of that gets chewed over by the Podcast team and we are joined by James Neil to have a chat about the shape of things to come.

Enjoy and please spread the show around to as many hockey friends as you like.

Fens Phantoms Fail

Listen to this week's show here.

After a rocky run of late, this was a must-win for the boys and it was clear from the offset that they were in no mood to let the Phantoms fix their form at Altrincham Ice Dome.

It was a game that felt a little tepid at times but there were moments of excitement and tempers flared at times as old scores were at the forefront of players' minds.

Talking of tempers, we caught up with Ben Wood at the end of the show to talk about his behaviour or late and whether he is turning into a reprobate and ruffian.  He swears that he isn't.  We are not convinced.

In any event, the usual levels of expert punditry, snark and inaccuracy are brought to you this week by a sense of fair play and admiration for Russian goal-moorings.

The So-What Sweepstake

Listen to the show right here.

The second of the midweek shows for the Cup semi-finals is here and it was certainly one with a variety of surprises, twists, turns and tantrums.  And that was just in the car park.

The Lightning go on to face the Bison in the final and the Phoenix are out of the running for the treble.

Well done MK.  Well done.

Knew That Wood Happen

Have a listen right here.

It was never going to be a pleasant Sunday game with the Dogs visiting Altrincham and they were on their usual form.  Kudos to Mr Sedlar though. He was immense in the net for the Steeldogs and he faced a lot of rubber from frustrated Phoenix forwards.

Still, this bitted pill is sweetened slightly by the two points taken from the Flames on Saturday.  And the results around the league on Sunday.

Onwards and upwards, it seems.  MKL visit the Dome on Thursday night with a cup-final in their sights.  They know how close they came to nailing Phoenix on Wednesday last and they will not want to have a re-run of that final period.

Make your way to the Dome for this exciting and gritty fixture and forget about the night the pooches came to town and made a mess on the carpet.

Not Live From Coventry!

Part One of the EPL Cup Semi-Final

Have a listen right here.

What began with a slow period of two great teams sizing each other up transitioned into a second period of testy play and grit.

Then disaster struck in the third.  The Phoenix D collapsed like a flan in a cupboard and MK punished the lads.  But, they weren't able to retain the three-goal advantage as Phoenix mugged them of it in the dying minutes of the game.

To hear the Phoenix travelling fans singing The Great Escape during the MOM announcement for their lads was hardly surprising!

To see the faces of an exhausted MK was almost heartbreaking.  But it was them or us.  And it was them.  So not that heartbreaking!

The show also features the welcome return of MK Rob and Harry.  Welcome back, boys!

So, it's all to play for in Altrincham.  Who will be facing Bison in the final?

Sunday, 2 February 2014

No Points in Complainin'

Listen to this week's show right here.

A zero-point weekend is never a good thing and when two of the potential points go to Sheffield, nobody in Manchester is going to be thrilled.  But this is a partisan business.  That's what team sports are.  As such, people are going to have a good old grumble.

It was a case of two bad nights at the office for Phoenix.  No matter how many times the Phoenix pushed up to take their shots of Sedlar and then Ryan, they could not get the lanes, bounces or luck.

These things happen and Phoenix remain top of the table but it is getting crowded up there.

Three games per week for a little while now and the team are feeling the strain so let us move on and, when Sheffield visit on Sunday next, the boys will be ready.

This week we have a chat with Adam Walker (who we haven't spoken to in quite a while!) and birthday boy James Neil.

Sunday, 26 January 2014

Joe Graham and the Bolt from the Blue

That was a rollercoaster and a half!  Putting aside the fact that the whole rink winced when Joe Graham was the hundredth player up to take a penalty in the shootout (including Joe apparently), the first period was not our boys' finest hour and MK were on the sort of defensive form that wins games.

The second period was an ill-tempered affair and Phoenix did well to keep their heads and stay out of serious trouble.

The third was a forceful strike back by the Phoenix and MK challenged all the way.

The moment the equaliser appeared, it was pretty clear where this would end, and it did.

Joe "The Saviour" Graham joins us for a chat at the end of the show and tells us about facing Telford next weekend.

Enjoy the show.

The Jets Bomb

Come and have a listen to the show right here.

On a weekend when the Flames and Lightning were well and truly served by lower-placed teams, there was every chance that the Jets might land at the Dome and fly home with two points.

No such luck for the home of the friendly bombs though as even their top-flight netminder couldn't stop a determined Mr Psurny from nearly making it a double hattrick.

Even picking up a goal that, according to the podcast pundits, defied the law of physics and temporal mechanics was not enough to make the Phoenix ponder the safety of fortress Ice Dome.

The player interviews return this week and who better to start with than Andy McKinney who talks to us about the forthcoming clashes with the Lightning and how fighting can be tiring.

Enjoy the show and we'll be back with you next week.

Bison Beaten

Have a listen right here.
Ben's back this week and things are back to normal.  Well, except that Phoenix are picking up two points out of two game weekends.  MKL are a problem for the Phoenix when on the road.  It is troublesome but then games against the Bison can be a problem too.

So a weekend featuring both teams are more likely to be two-pointers than four.  No shock that that's exactly how it went too.

Neil Morris joins us on the show this week to have a chat about how things are and what the road game wobbles are about.

Slough Jets at our rink next week.  They should be an easy mark but, even in their present state, they can still cause upsets.

Let us see where this goes.  It's nearly Cup time too.

Curse of Coventry

Take as a listen here as Nigel stands in again for the still unwell Ben.

This week saw a trip to Coventry, which we would all like to forget, to play the MK Lightning.  Things did not go the Phoenix way at all but it still left Phoenix with 4 points to aim at for the weekend.

It's hardly surprising that the loss of the Phoenix starting netminder to illness, Jorge having given it the heave-ho earlier in the week, and the back-up stepping in at the last second from the Minotaurs, left the Phoenix playing severely defensive road-game hockey and that's what they did but MK are just too good for that.

Jaroslav Cesky stepping in as injury cover for Bakrlik certainly helped but it wasn't enough to pick up the first 2 points of the weekend from Bison.

Then, at the Dome on Sunday, the first period was a cause of some slight concern but it was a decisive win in the end and two points were salvaged.

Lots of upsets elsewhere in the league too.  That Telford game is getting closer...... can you smell it?

Of course, if one does the maths, two teams are now out of the running for a trip to Coventry for the big old jamboree in April...

A Ghost of a Chance

Find this week's show right here.

Ben is off with the lurgy and so the really rather splendid Nigel McFarlane has stepped-up to bring you a short version of the show this week.

It may not have been the best of games but those points look kinda fine now, writing this after the MK road game that followed but that's hockey for you.

No winter classic here but Nigel covers it rather well and, of course, we know that some of the women of a certain age in our audience, do quite enjoy listening to his silky tones.

Thanks Nigel!

p.s. - this would have been available days ago but I was genuinely stuck in bed - Ben
